TV Interview

Can't believe I was being interviewed by a Chinese Canadian television station FairChild TV in Toronto this past weekend...I was nervous and it was my first time getting a make-up. The 30 mins interview will be on air in February and I will post a online link video once it becomes available. off course the interview was conducted in Mandarin. But it will have lots of nice images... It's about my bookbinding and marbling work.

"Fables de St Lavalette" 1847 Paris. Contains numerous beautiful, charming etchings. Size: Quarto. Bound in French morroco. Top edge gilding. Inside with red suede paste down/ flyleaves. Handsewn silk headbands. Design in an image of a fox. Chemise and slipcase with artist's own deocrative paper. Toolings and titling in gold. Pages were washed and are in prestine condition. " Le Roman de la Momie" Illustrated by George Barbier, Paris, 1920. Size in Octavo. George Barbier is the most famous / important French illustrator during the Art Deco era in Paris. Barbier's pochoir prints/books were extremely rare to find and usually command high prices in auctions. This sumptuous book contains exquisite, beautiful graphics by Barbier in Egyptian style. My favorite combinations! Top edge gilding, Headsewn silkheadbands. Bound in French Morroco. Leather Onlays and gilding / titling in gold. Endpaper with my own marbled paper in red feather pattern, gold sheep skin pastedown. Chemise and slipcase covered with my own decorative paper. Book pages were washed and in prestine condition. Four New Design Bindings

So here I am, four new design bindings on four wonderful books. One is 1920s French Art Deco "Le Roman de la Momie" illustrated by George Barbier. Another is mid 1800s antique French fable book "Fables de S Lavalette"illustrated by Grandville similar to our Aesop's Fables....Third book is a beautiful French 1930 book about travelling in Greece with illustrations similar to Matisse or Laboureur. Black and white outline drawings that typified 1930's French book art illustrations.....And finally the fourth book is a little album containing wonderful delicate chinese paper cuts........

Guest Book for Toronto Public Library Merril Collections

So here it is.....At last, I had been working on this commissioned guest sign-in book for Toronto Public Library Merril Collection of Science fictions and Fantasies for quite some time and finally the book was completed. The design was inspired by the Northern Lights.....My hands were so sore from tooling all the lines/dots one at a time !!!

Teaching a miniature book workshop!

So here they are......I just taught my very first workshop in miniature book binding through the Canadian Bookbinder and Bookartists Guild this past weekend. It was fun and rewarding to teach others what I enjoy doing and know. Everyone went home with two different styles of bindings in miniature: a full leather case binding, and a French simplified, complete with mini lessons on how to pare leather, use stamping press, finishing, onlay work and polishing!

Solo Exhibition of Contemporary " Marbled Graphics " by Robert Wu

For the entire month of December, I will be exhibiting a selection of my "Marbled Graphics" at the Toronto Public Library Northern District ( Yonge and Eglinton). It's a free event so please mark it down on your calendar and come check out my art work!!! Direction: Get off at Eglinton Subway station and walk up one block north on Yonge Street.

Album Marbled Graphics acquired by Harvard

I recently completed an one-of-a-kind book called "Album Marbled Graphics" and it contains specimens of my original marbled graphics between the years 2006- 2009. I am very pleased to announce that it was purchased by Harvard University and is now part of the Houghton library's Special Collection. I am very honoured.

2009 Designer Bookbinders UK International Bookbinding Competition

This paper binding (millimeter binding style) was covered with my own marbled graphics "Sumi-Cloud". The title of the book is called "Water" and was letterpress printed by hand with original woodcut prints. I completed this binding for the Designer Bookbinders’ International Bookbinding Competition 2009. It is among the 125 bindings selected to be exhibited in the Bodleian Library, Oxford UK (invitation image shown above) and the subsequent tour in the USA.
